A bit of a let down after the initial good debut of this fantasy series.....

Inherited Danger is the second installment of Brian Rathbone's Godland fantasy series and, I am afraid to say, falls far short of its fairly impressive debut.

Readers will recall that in the first novel, a comet returned to the Godlands signifying the beginning of a long prophecised series of events. Young Catrin began exhibiting mysterious powers linked to the comet and the enemy Zjohns invaded from across the sea because they considered her a threat.......

The story continues exactly where we left off with Catrin leaving her homeland in order to better understand her powers and her part in the destiny that is due to unfold. But, over the course of the novel, there are vast patches where not really a lot of anything actually happens and you are left feeling mostly as though the author is merely trying to stretch out the story for as long as possible. For example, the whole part of the novel where Catrin finally meets those who can teach her just feels notably long and, in my opinion, could have been cut considerably to move the pace a little faster.

This is such a disappointment of a novel as I had high hopes for it having read the first installment. Unfortunately, this just doesn't compare.

The characters here seem to lack the life they shone with in the previous book and come across as shadows of their former selves. And there is no excitement, no action, no thrills just lots and lots of pages where the threads of the plot just seem to drag.

Even the climatic ending feels like an anti-climax and, unless further installments become downloadable for free, I am not sure if I will bother purchasing them! This installment is now free for Kindle but I did in fact pay for my copy on Amazon! Oh, how I wish I had waited now......

This series could well get better, but this is a paticulary weak chapter in the continuing story and this does not bode well as I thought it was better to keep the reader hooked for at least a little longer. If this was the third or fourth installment then I could possibly forgive it for dragging a little but to do this early on does not inspire confidence in me for the remaining books....

I think this is one series that I will not be continuing and that is something of a shame......
