Gomorrah is an extraordinarily powerful book - easily the most shocking and moving I have read this year. It's an non-fictional expose of the Neapolitan mafia, compiled by a dedicated, and enraged young journalist Roberto Saviano. The book stands in stark contrast to the mafia screen icons of Goodfellas - there are no romantic portrayals of family bonds. Instead this is a disturbing and riveting account of the pernicious nature of organised crime. What makes Saviano's account so interesting is that he explores how organised crime permeates every aspect of Neapolitan life.
