I started a Psychology degree last year and realised pretty early on that I had absolutely no idea what made a great social sciences essay. So I bought a copy of this wonderful little book from Amazon for £11.99 and I flicked through it frantically the week before my first assignment was due. I'm so glad I did. Now it its third edition, this is a slim paperback with only 121 pages, so it is not a daunting, wordy tome. Instead, it is a succinctly written and well laid out guide to what tutors are looking for in a good essay and how to plan and write one. The author starts with the basics of essay planning, writing introductions, addressing the ... Read the complete review

****Good Essay Writing: A Social Sciences Guide - Peter Redman**** Having recently started a course with the Open University i was a little bit worried about essay writing as i have not written any in several years. This was a recommended book for the course (social sciences related) and when i saw that it had been given good reviews i decided to buy it.The one i am reviewing is the third edition. The book is split into eleven sections and these are as follows: 1.The introduction-explains what the book is about 2.What tutors look for when marking essays -This section is extremely helpful as it shows you how tutors mark you and the ... The Good Essay Writing by Peter Redman is a must have for anyone studying within the Social Sciences. I bought this book as the course i'm doing recommended it and as i hadnt studied for roughly 15 years i was going to accept all the help i can get. I bought my copy for £11.99 from Play.com and was very happy with my purchase. The book is written by Peter Redman who teaches Social Science at the Open University. So the book has been written with Open University students in mind. It has the answer to all questions student come across when preparing to write an essay. The contents are broken down into 11 sections: 1. Introduction on how ... Read the complete review

I’m currently studying for an MA – but not now within the Social Sciences as this book is aimed for! My MA started in Social Sciences and moved to another subject area; however this book has helped me with all of my essays. Although I’m studying with the Open University I would recommend this book for all students – and also at degree level. What Redman has done is tailor for all institutions then added a small section for all OU students at the end of each chapter. The chapters are easy to follow and I would suggest flicking through it once but then dipping in and out of it as necessary. He covers topics such as: • What tutors look ... Read the complete review
