Advantages: Touching Story
Disadvantages: None
This is one of those books that I grew up with and mainly due to our class in Year 7, aged around 11, having to read it during English lessons. The best part of all though was that our class got to meet the author Michelle Magorian as she was a friend of our English teacher and was invited to come down for a day.
I remember coming across as slightly rude when asking her how old she was when she wrote her first book, however I don't think she found it offensive as it does seem like quite a legitimate question to ask. Let me get on with describing more of the book though.
This story is set during the war and we follow the life of William who is a quiet boy and goes to live with an old man named Tom. Tom teaches William a lot about life and this is one of those stories where throughout the book you see William change from a boy to a man. Not in terms of looks as he is still only aged around ten, but in his manner and personality.
Tom is a very kind man and although he may not initially come across like this towards William, they soon learn to care for eachother and well life isn't quite as straightforward as it seems, and as simple as this book makes it out to be. To find out what happens to William and Tom, then you have to go and read the book.
Just to add that this was also turned into a short Drama series on ITV, with John Thaw as Tom and it was also excellent. Everyone was casted perfectly and I highly recommend you also checking that out.
Summary: I'll be looking out for similar books
