Advantages: Well Written And A Great Story Line
Disadvantages: Its A Tear Jerker
Goodnight Mr Tom is a book my mum gave me when I was younger and still to this day its my favourite book and one that I never bore of reading.
The book was written by Michelle Magorian and has been in circulation since 1981. I first read this book when I was 12 but to be honest I think its one that should be viewed by parents before allowing their child to read it as it does contain some uncomfortable but powerful reading.
The book tells the story of a young boy called Willie who is evacuated from central London to the country where he is boarded with a older widowed male called Tom Oakley.
As time goes by and the two begin to build a close friendship and trust it becomes clear to Tom that Willie has had a hard life and faced with severe abuse both physically and mentally from his mother.
Just when things look like they life is eventually going well for William his mother requests that he is returned.
William has to leave his friends and Tom, his potential new family and return to London but when Tom doesn't hear from the young boy he goes in search of him only to find there are devastating consequences to his decisions of allowing William to leave.
I don't want to give to much away to the story line but its well worth the read, it has so many amazing characters and its so well written that it will have you turning page after page.
An amazing book, both well written and informative that will capture the minds of both adults and children. I also believe it gives a good insight into how it must have been for the children living in London at the time of the war.

- 06/11/09 I agree, i meant to mention the film aswell, the film and book are both alike which is unusual as the movies usually get altered in some way. I love the film too x |
