Advantages: A good book which doesn't dodge issues

Disadvantages: --

Don't just dismiss this book as a children's classic, because it hold a lot of charm and poignancy as a book for adults. The recent televisation of Michelle Magorian's 'Goodnight Mr Tom' will have, no doubt ahve increased the book's popularity, but if you still haven't read it, I would thoroughly recommend that you try it.

'Goodnight Mr Tom' holds a number of qualities. It is moving and does not just dodge issues because it is a children's book. Michelle Magorian deals with the effects of war on children, death, failure at school and child abuse, yet the happy ending means that the gloom isn't dwelt on.

A good all-round book.

I read this to one of my children with a tear in my eye - it's superb but I didn't rate the TV attempt
