The Book ************ Dian Fossey at the age of 35 traveled to rwanda to study the mountain gorillas. This turned into a life long commitment to the gorillas by Fossey. It tells of her introduction to the gorillas and the way she became, to a certain extent accepted by them. Fossey learnt how to make detailed drawings of each of the gorillas and even named them. Fosseys informs the reader of the problems they had with poachers and her battle to stop them from killing the gorillas for money. In 1967, when she was 35 years old, American born Dian Fossey travelled to Rwanda to begin her study of mountain gorilla’s in the Virunga mountains. The Virungas which lie on the borders of what was Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo), Rwanda and Uganda are isolated and not easily accessible. Despite this Fossey stayed for 13 of the next 15 years only returning to the USA or UK on occasion. Fossey was funded by Louis Leaky, the same individual who funded Jane Goodalls similar work with chimpanzees and her initial time in Africa led to her award of a PhD from Cambridge University.
