Advantages: Very emotional, easy to connect with Piper
Disadvantages: Can drown your mood
You turn the first page. You start to read. You cannot stop...
I know no other person who expresses themselves the way Billie does. The way she talks about her past, her thought, her feelings, your heart really does go out to her. Growing Pains is not a book for the light hearted.
*****
Billie starts her book with a section from her final script with Doctor Who. It gives it a nice clear beginning, and indicates that what you are about to read is not a happy story. "Planet Earth. This is where I was born. And this is where I died..."
After such a touching introduction, Billie goes on to talking about the thing that started her career - singing. The way she describes her experience so passionately, it makes everything seem so rosy. Her way with words really help you imagine you were there, living her life. Everything was new, everything was exciting.
*****
When we get into Act Two, Bilie takes us all the way back to when little Billie was born, and she takes us on a journey right through her childhood. Everything seems normal, civilised! But then you start to realise what you reading is not about a world-famous girl enjoying her teen years, but about a young girl in need of serious help. Billie desribes her troubles, you feel like she really is reaching out for you, waiting for somebody to hold her hand and rescue her.
*****
If you have the will power and strength to read on, Billie introduces a very special man - Chris Evans. You begin to read what seems like a romance novel, and it's hard to imagine such a life could be possible!
Then Billie starts to mention her acting. The big turnaround in her life. In my opinion, this is the most fascinating and enjoyable section to read. If you thought she was passionate about her singing, you aint seen anything yet!
*****
Growing Pains is published by a massive company, Hodder & Stoughton. It is a great thickness, it's full of brilliant photographs, and the writing is a sensible size too! With so much hard work gone into it, Growing Pains makes a fantastic read, and allows you to connect with Billie Piper in a way you have never experienced before.
Follow Billie on a magical adventure through her life and listen to what she says. You wont forget it!
Summary: A journey through the past 24 years of Billie's interesting and upsetting life...

- 01/07/07 A very good - and affectionate - review on this book. Thick as it is already, I still have "issues" with one so young publishing an autobiography. Although in this case I guess that issue has been cleverly side stepped by the title! Richard. |
