Advantages: Dragons and Sam Vimes

This is the first of a very successful sub-series of Terry Pratchett's Diskworld series of books. The Night Watch of Ankh-Morpork are called upon to rid the city of a dangerous dragon. The only problem is that there are only 4 of them and no one, least of all the dragon, takes them seriously. It's a great tale of love, mystery and dungeons with the bolts on the inside.

Pratchett writes well observed social commentry wrapped up in a quirky humour that is full of physics based and cultural jokes. I was so proud of myself that I got a joke about string theory. It is written to be enjoyed on so many layers that he can be enjoyed by children and science geeks alike. (I'm not saying which category I put myself in!)

Guards! Guards! is a fast paced story with lots of action, laughs and an Orangutan Librarian, who could ask for more.
