Advantages: Meet Carrot, Vimes and Nobby for the first time

Disadvantages: Not long enough!

Ah, the first of the Guards books in the Discworld series, with its introduction to Samuel Vimes and his brave Night Watch men, protecting Ankh-Morpork from crime, Cut-Me-Own-Throat-Dibbler and Dragons.. yes, dragons.

Some evil baddie forces a group of incompetent types to summon a dragon to the city and the Night Watch are left to protect the people, despite Nobby's predilections for being a slacker and the general dilution of law and order in the City.

Filled with Pratchett's usual mix of humour, characterisation and storyline, this is a joy to read, and the characters sufficiently interesting to have inspired further novels (Men at Arms, Feet of Clay, etc)

Read it and then read the others. The Guards are great and although this novel is very much context for future ones, it's worth it on it's own account. You won't regret it.
