Advantages: Easy To Follow, Light Hearted Approach, CD Included,
Disadvantages: Nothing New Here, And Despite Chapter 14 You Will Never Learn Jazz From A Book -LOL!
A Guide To The Guitar for Dummies book (inc. CD) - by an experienced guitarist.
WHAT IS IT?
Guitar for Dummies is yet another teach yourself guitar tuition book, in an already flooded market.
The Dummies series of books have covered so many topics it's hard to keep up -lol!! and they've certainly picked up a (usually well earned) positive reputation along the way.
This guitar tutor book is written by Mark Phillips, John Chappell, who according to the book are a Director Of Music and an Award Winning Guitarist no less (respectively). But don't be impressed by fancy titles - Always remember that most of greatest guitarists had no qualifications in music at all -lol!!
So what we want to know is does this book bring anything new to the table? Well yes and no, it's certainly user friendly, well constructed and put together with all the info you'll need explained in a friendly light hearted way -and the authors do a good job...
But it's not perfect; for instance -confining a style of music to a single short chapter, as if it's something you can just digest like a school book -is a not realistic. (For e.g. jazz; -it takes years of practice, gigs, listening, and trading ideas and concepts with other musicians to be a fluent jazz player -the absolute most you'll get from a book is a few pointers and the basics -lol!!).
In conclusion; this is a good learning tool, it's a worthy addition to the library of tutor books -you won't be disappointed at all; but I don't think there's anything you couldn't find in other good books...
So if you're a fan of the Dummies books -you'll love it, if not check and compare all the other book on the market too, before deciding whether to buy or not!
Hope you found my review of some help, and good luck with your bargain hunting!!
Best wishes,
Brett
