Advantages: Really makes you believe the events
Disadvantages: A few unanswered questions
Imagine it`s early 1864-the Confederacy have just been knocked for six at the Battle of Gettysburg and the tide of the war has turned in the Norths favour-or has it? The Souths General Robert E.Lee is approached by a man who offers him a remarkable weapon in quantities that can not only resupply his Army of Northern Virginia but also provide each man with unbelieveable firepower. This unknown mans accent is very strange but then so is the weapon on offer. Its a chance that Lee cannot refuse for there is no denying what an AK-47 automatic assault rifle could do to the progress of the Civil War!! Turtledove has created an history of a Civil War that never happened. His storyline is complex, innovative and also highly believeable. The characters he employs are very human and enable you to live the unfolding events through their eyes. The research that goes into each of his books is exhaustive and he has won many plaudits from Historians over this book. Oh and where does the AK-47 come from and also the man with the strange accent?-why from 20th century South Africa ,of course ,for the Boers are out to change history ,for they couldn`t control their present. A few unanswered questions. What exactly do these Boers hope to gain? How much do they think the can change the world by the Souths victory? Why and how have they the time-travel capabilities? I have loaned this book out so many times I must buy myself a mint-copy!Everyone who has read it is of an equal opinion-a riveting read that will keep you turning the pages over as fast as you can.Brilliant!! If you are a fan of Alternate History or have an interest in the American Civil War then this novel is a "must read"!Turtledove once again amazes me by the historical detail and solid grasp of events that he displays The research that goes into one of his books is astounding but after all he is a professor of Byzantine History at Berkeley !!!!

- 02/02/01 Good op, although you might want to chop off the last paragraph which just repeats the first paragraph.
I am even tempted to read this book! |
