The first of an amazing chronicle (The Gunslinger: The Dark Tower - Stephen King)![]()
Advantages: Serves as a great introduction to the epic Disadvantages: Too episodic The Gunslinger on first reading, is a stand alone collection of tales featuring the same character - eponymously referred to as the Gunslinger, on the trail of the man in black, who is fleeing across the desert from him. As he gets closer to him, the tale becomes so much more. This is the first chapter of Stephen King's famous Dark Tower cycle (a story so vast that elements of it are told outwith the seven novels and the story bleeds into his other books) and differs vastly from the subsequent novels in the respect that they are a lot less episodic than this tale. Probably the weakest of all of the seven books, it is still probably the most important because we get a glimpse at the true ruthlessness of character before he is tempered slightly by the companions he picks up on the way. His chasing of the Man in Black serves as an opening chapter to his true quest - the one for the mystical and possibly mythical Dark Tower, and the obvious fact that nobody and nothing is going to stand in his way. Summary: Chapter One of Stephen King's grandest work |
