Advantages: Brilliant

Hairy Maclary has a wonderful time at the dairy where he comes from .This book is much loved by children and adults who tell the tale. It is such a success that many more books are written about his capers. Hairy maclary is written by lynley Dodd and published by puffin Hairy Maclary is a cat a big ball of fluff. A scruffy cat The illustrations are bright fairly simple and full of movement. The text is cheer full, fun and is written in rhyme I bought one of the books home from school to repair this week as it is so well used it is falling to bits so thought I would tell you about it the title of this book is Hairy Maclary’s business OK I know its not hairy maclary from Donaldson dairy but it is the same cat having exploits written in the same style and it is very similar only a different tale. And I couldn’t find the other book ,this one needs mending and this title isn’t available as a category yet and it is taking a fair time for new suggestions to be added so I am sorry if you decided to read this because you needed to know about this specific book but I assure you that from the dairy is equally as good and in the same style. Anyway Hairy Maclary……… show business. “In riverside hall On cabbage tree row The cat club were having Their annual show” Hairy Maclary is tied up to a tree outside the hall. He is not a handsome enough cat for the show. Eventually after struggling and squirming he gets free and dragging his lead “He was off at the trot” He went into the cat show the where the posh cats were. “He pranced around the floor flapping and flustering, bothering, blustering’ leaving behind him A hiss and a roar” Then the president spotted him “COLLAR HIM QUICK” , But Hairy Maclary was slick “ he slid u
nder tables” A picture of him under the table and peoples legs and feet he creates havoc in the dog show jumping on chairs tangling together belongings and bags. “Along came miss Plum” GOT HIM she said” She snaffles him up. On the next page we see the prize-winners preening and purring a very smug looking bunch of cats the longest whisker winner the snootiest cat a very smug looking cat with the biggest family. Then we turn the page to see who won the prize for the scruffiest cat? It was Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s dairy looking scrawny, hair dishevelled sitting with a red rosette with 1 on it. I thoroughly enjoy reading Hairy Maclary books to children they are fun. You can put a loy of expression into your voice when telling the story and the children join in as they get to know and love this cat. Good to read to a single child or a group. Children love it when they can read it for themselves. Thanks for reading my appraisal of Hairy maclary from Donaldson’s dairy when he goes into show business at the cat show ……..Best wishes . Mary

- 01/03/03 RE your comment on non dairy cheeses- you really need to seek out small health food shops, and sometimes delicatessens do them. A company called redwood does red and white cheddar with/out cranberries or "bacon" pieces, plus feta, nacho, cream cheeses and some other varietes the address is http://www.redwoodfoods.c o.uk/shop/category.php?id =5. Plamil also does Soya cheese at http://www.plamilfoods.co .uk/ . Also, bear in mind that soya cheeses are a real aquired taste for some, and they dont really taste too much like real cheese. They are also of varying quality- I advise you to steer clear of Vegerella its a bit rank. |
