Hairy Maclary's bone is the second in the series of Hairy Maclary picture books by New Zealand (would that be Kiwi?) author Lynley Dodd. It was published in 19844, one year after the original "Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy". So, Hairy Maclary is a little black Skye terrier with a big attitude! Characters -------------- What I love about this series is that the characters remain the same. Hairy Maclary - a Skye terrier Hercules Morse - a Great Dane Bottomley Potts - a Dalmatian Muffin McLay - an Old English sheepdog Bitzer Maloney - a whippet or greyhound Schnitzel von Krumm - a ... The book is written by Lynley Dodd and I'm guessing it's illustrated by her too as there is no other name on the front of the book. The one we have is a paperback and is quite small is size. It costs £4.99 if you buy it new but I'm pretty sure you could find it in a charity shop or on Ebay for much cheaper than that. The story is about a little, scruffy dog called Hairy Maclary who gets given a bone from the local butcher. As he journeys home, all of his friends follow him in a bid to try and get a lick or bite of the bone but he is blissfully unaware of them. As Hairy trots under garden gates and over piles of rubble, one by one his friends get stuck and by ... Read the complete review

This was the first Lynley Dodd book my three-year-old had from the library (she was two at the time) and she loves it so much that I went and bought it. (In fact, I don’t know who loves the Lynley Dodd books more, she or me.) Hairy Maclary is a small, black mongrel who is presented with a bone by the local butcher and trots off home with it. It’s not long, however, before he has a drooling bunch of neighbourhood pooches in hot pursuit. One by one he manages to lose them all so that he can take his bone home in one piece, all by himself. The text is written in rhythmic verse which I found from the beginning really encouraged my daughter to ... Read the complete review

This baby/toddler book is basically a poem set to illustrations. It tells the rather odd tale of a dog (the eponymous hero from the title) who goes for a walk and is given a bone. Along the way, different dogs meet up and join him because they want to take his bone. As he gets further on his journey, they get stuck one by one until he is safe to go home alone. It is worth noting that this is a small book - rectangular in shape. It's significantly smaller than your average book, so you're getting less for your money! The book is primarily about rhyme, and there is a repetitive nature to it which will help little ones develop their vocabulary. Like ... Read the complete review

Hairy Maclary. The very name makes my face smile, a reflex reaction caused by the many times my son and I have laughed over the enchanting tales from Lynley Dodd. I don't think there is a book from the Hairy Maclary stable that we do not own; if I am wrong, you can bet your bottom dollar that i shall remedy this upon discovery, for he has been the backbone of bed-time tales (and reception class "calm-downers" during my time as classroom assistant!) for many a year. This little tale, told once more in that endearing rhyme and rhythm so ably perfected by Lynley Dodd, teels us of Hairy Maclary's good fortune, from obtaining his bone ... Read the complete review
