Advantages: Another great read
Disadvantages: not very long
The book is written by Lynley Dodd and I'm guessing it's illustrated by her too as there is no other name on the front of the book. The one we have is a paperback and is quite small is size. It costs £4.99 if you buy it new but I'm pretty sure you could find it in a charity shop or on Ebay for much cheaper than that.
The story is about a little, scruffy dog called Hairy Maclary who gets given a bone from the local butcher. As he journeys home, all of his friends follow him in a bid to try and get a lick or bite of the bone but he is blissfully unaware of them. As Hairy trots under garden gates and over piles of rubble, one by one his friends get stuck and by the time you reach the end of the story, Hairy is on his own with his precious bone.
The book is written in the same way as the others in the series. They have a rhyming theme to them except on this one the last line of each paragraph is left until you turn the page and the picture reveals what has happened to the dogs that are pursuing Hairy's bone.
The illustrations in this book are really nice. I would describe them as being quite sketchy and I'm pretty sure that they are meant for children aged 2 and above. They aren't brightly coloured or eyecatching but they are very quirky!
Noah loved reading this story as we have been working our way through Dodd's books and he now knows Hairy and his friends very well. He was so excited to see this book in the library earlier today that it would have been a sin to leave it behind. He loved this one as much as the original and I have already read it to him five times this afternoon.
I enjoyed the story too although not to the extent that Noah did. I loved the way that Hairy was so unaware of his fellow friends who were quite obviously plotting on trying to have a taste of the bone. I also loved the way that the book is based around the main character but it was almost like he was unaware that the story was being made up around such an innocent action.
Over all this is another successful story book from Lynley Dodd and I would highly recommend it. There are quite a few other stories that she has written which you could try including Hairy Maclary Scattercat and Hairy Maclary showbusiness.
Summary: I enjoyed this one almost as much as the original.
