Now usually the best place to look up movie information is without a doubt The Internet Movie Database! With its endless list of just about every single movie you can always find what you're looking for. But for some people going onto the Internet is just that little bit costly and sometimes you're just in a rush to access movie information. If this is the case, then ladies and gentlemen, I give to you Halliwell's Film & Video Guide. The book is currently in its 16th instalment with the 2001 edition. The book is near the region of almost 1000 pages and it's almost as big and as heavy as the Yellow Pages! Packed within these pages are over ... Read the complete review

Halliwells Film & Video Guide is a great reference book. It is packed with information that would be great for the film buff, or for someone who might be doing research, or for someone setting a quiz, which needs information about films. Watching films on television, or renting a video that you’ve never heard of can be a bit of a lottery, you can take a lot of the guesswork away by reading a copy of Halliwells, getting the overall synopses, plots, actors, running time and any other information about the film that is pertinent, before actually deciding if it's worth watching. The book contains more than 23000 reviews of films, using an easy ... Read the complete review

This book is invaluable for all movie lovers; the Halliwell film and video guide is a very useful tool. If you like reading a review of a film before you either rent it or watch it on TV, then this is the guide for you. Compared to the Virgin guide then this edition has reviews of many more films. The Virgin guide only includes films it believes are noteworthy. It seems that Virgin are judging our tastes for us! We use the Halliwell guide to check up on a TV film before we settle down to watch it. There are so many films on TV that I have never heard of that it is easy to dismiss them as not of interest to me. But think of all those times that you ... Read the complete review

I'm massively into films, often being ridiculed for having more DVD's than Blockbuster (I think they're jealous ;)) so for Christmas I was given the 2008 version of this book. This is one hefty book however I really didn't like it. Yes it's a fairly easy reference book but the rating system is inconsistent and sometimes criminal...I really felt like setting it on fire when I discovered Aliens recieved 0 stars out of 4, disgusting. There are also some stereotypical, baying to the masses ratings that were ridiculous ie Return of the Jedi getting full marks along with A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back, why?? This book is also not a complete ... Read the complete review

Leslie Halliwell died in 1986, and ever since, the Halliwells books have been continued by other hands, with new reviews and information added by them. Having once been the result of one - admittedly old-fashioned - filmgoer's passion for the cinema, they are now a film reference brand name, with new reviews not in keeping with Halliwell's line of thinking. Indeed, the editors have now started to change the reviews Halliwell wrote in order to keep the books in line with popular thinking. So, thus, the whole range of books are useless. Halliwell's value was as a member of an old, nostalgic generation who preferred the classic Hollywood style. I ... Read the complete review
