Newest Review: ... fantasy novel about a faerie Princess and the various dangers she faces from the Seelie and Unseelie Courts, the truth of the matter is that such a 'plot' is merely a sideline in a novel that is really about the bedroom antics of one extremely sexually driven individual. Hamilton avoids her protagonist being labelled as a slut by conveniently creating a faerie court in which it seems expected ... more |

Having JUST finished reading Laurell .K. Hamilton's 'A Caress of Twilight', I felt the immediate need to come here and warn people most strongly against it! I haven't read any of the Anita Blake novels, so I'm not quite sure whether or not Hamilton has a habit of writing novels more suited to the Mills and Boon (or perhaps something even trashier) section, or if she just took a nosedive with this one. Whatever the case, I was completely stumped by the awful quality of narrative and Hamilton's thinly veiled wish to write about perverse sexual issues. Let's start with the plot. Whilst Hamilton wants readers to believe she is writing a serious fantasy novel about ... Read the complete review

Having (as mentioned in a couple of recent reviews) rediscovered my library card, I embarked on yet another literary adventure, and made the decision to start reading as many of the Anita Blake books as I could get my grubby little paws on, following a recommendation from someone at work. Having got up to book ten, I'm feeling a little dissatisfied about the whole thing, and here's why. The Books The books in the series are as follows- Guilty Pleasures; The Laughing Corpse; Circus of the Damned; The Lunatic Cafe; Bloody Bones; The Killing Dance; Burnt Offerings; Blue Moon; Obsidian Butterfly; Narcissus in Chains; Cerulean Sins. The ... Read the complete review

Anita Blake is a government sanctioned vampire executioner and can also raise the dead. The world is similar to ours if our world was full of witches, vampires, werewolves etc etc who have just gained the same rights as the rest of us. I'd been meaning to read some of Anita Blake's books for a while as they'd been mentioned by many people in other fandoms I like. So I borrowed Burnt Offerings from a friend (I couldn't for the life of my figure out what order the books were meant to be in). What a disappointment. This stuff reads like fan-fiction, and not even very good fanfiction. Anita Blake is a Mary Sue, she can do everything ... Read the complete review

I first read Hamilton's books 3 years ago, and I am still re-reading them over and over again! This long series; the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series, really does keep you turning the pages, and buying the new books! Basically the story is set in our world, but one where vampires are not only real, but also have rights within human society. They have their own hierarchies, and laws, but sometimes vampires wont keep to the human laws, and go rougue and kill people, and thats where vampire executioners come in. Anita Blake is not unly a vampire hunter, but also an animator, meaning she raises the dead for a living as zombies - and yes they also exist! ... Read the complete review
