WOW! What a book this is! Telling the story of the English invasion into French territory, the book focuses primarily around a single character by the name of Thomas of Hookton who is part of the archery dividsion. However, not only does he fight for his country, he has a further ultimatum, and something of a personal goal. Many years previously his father was killed by a Frenchman, raiding his family household and stealing all their worthily possessions! Now seen as a revenge mission, this novel tells the intriguing story of how things ultimately start to get on top of our lone missionary, and how his underestimation of the task in hand could lead to his own undoing. Exciting from the outset, this novel never loses the pace, depicting some of the most realistic and gruesome battles I have had the fortune of reading. The very firth in the incredibly promising Grail Quest series, this book sets some standard for the following titles to uphold, and I found this to be 500 pages of riveting reading that meant I simply could not put this book down until it was compete! Bernard Cornwell shows his has more to his bow than his previous inter-related works, and this medieval based tale is a real joy to behold. Beautifully written, I can find little fault with what is a convincing and realistic read. Thoroughly recommended!

- 10/06/01 I'd go along with moistoist, interesting op though. I did find things to fault the book, but you've read my op so I won't bother blobbing on about them. Any idea when the next one is due? |
