I first read this story when I was fourteen, and thoroughly enjoyed it. However, it wasn't until I was 25 that I got hold of the audiobooks, read by Stephen Fry. Money well spent, as Mr Fry makes the story come alive. His voice is so expressive, and he tells the story in a way that makes you really believe in the characters and what is happening to them.
I love the way that Rowling's work and Fry's reading go together so well. I've also heard part of the Jim Dale version and although that was also very enjoyable, I much preferred Fry's version.
Stephen Fry takes us through Harry's first year of Hogwarts in a way that makes the story come alive. I found myself feeling scared for the characters when they were in danger, happy for them when they succeeded and angry on their behalf when unjust things happened to them. I don't want to go into too much detail regarding the storyline here, because there is the chance that some who are reading this may not have read the book or listened to the audiobook before.
I think that this audiobook is brilliant for children to read along with in the company of adults as well as those people who may have already read the book, but want to add another dimension to the story. I personally listen to the audiobooks in work, where I can follow the story at the same time as getting my tasks done.
All in all, a brilliant audiobook.
