Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone - J. K. Rowling ... stairs of a family who loathes you. Then, in an absurd, magical twist of fate you find yourself surrounded by wizards, a caged snowy owl, a phoenix-feather wand and jellybeans that come in every flavour, including strawberry, curry, grass and sardine. Not only that, but you discover that you are a wizard yourself! This is exactly what happens to young Harry Potter in J K Rowling's enchanting, funny debut novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. In the non-magical human world--the world of Muggles--Harry is a nobody, treated like dirt by the aunt and uncle who begrudgingly inherited him when his parents were killed by the evil Voldemort. But in the world of wizards, small, skinny Harry is renowned as a survivor of the wizard who tried to kill him. He is left only with a lightning-bolt scar on his forehead, curiously refined sensibilities and a host of mysterious powers to remind him that he's quite, yes, altogether different from his aunt, uncle, and spoilt, pig-like cousin Dudley.

Premium Review Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone - J. K. Rowling: The Beginning of A Great Adventure (360 words)
by - written on 10/03/08 (Very useful, 55 readings)
Rating:

I had this book almost immediately after it came out but I only started reading it weeks after. I was really looking forward to opening this mint-condition book and beginning reading, but was busy doing other things at the time. Once I started reading, I couldn't put the book down! It appealed to me so much as you just couldn't wait to turn the next page and read on. J.K.Rowling is an excellent writer for this and I love her rather simplistic yet exciting writing style. Harry Potter is a young boy who lives with his Uncle and the Dursley's. An evil dark wizard called Voldemort had killed his parents Lilly and James many years ago, and a distinct scar was left ...  Read the complete review

It is now 10 years since J.K.Rowling first told her story of Harry Potter and his time at Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry. But since then the first six books in the series have sold in excess of 325 millions copies worldwide and the seventh and final book in the series Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows was the first book to ever sell over 12 millions in the U.S alone! I will admit to having read the series three times at least. But I am now reading them again and thought it was about time I wrote my own Harry Potter review.. Harry Potter and The Philosophers Stone is the first in the series of Seven Books written by J.K.Rowling about a ...  Read the complete review

I tried to resist. I really did. I tried so had to ignore the hype but eventually curiosity got the better of me and I had to submit. Yes, Harry Potter had me in his grasp. When I first heard about Harry Potter, I wondered what all the fuss was about. A book about a schoolboy wizard sounded ok – anything to get boys reading I thought. But then it wasn’t only 10-year-old boys who were raving about it. Their sisters were too. And then their parents started. New books about Harry Potter were being released and people were queuing up at ridiculous hours to get their hands on a copy. It was Buzz Lightyear all over again! I decided not to get ...  Read the complete review
