Advantages: Magical world.
Disadvantages: Young children may get scared.
I always promised myself that I would only read the Harry Potter books once I have watched the films, as the other way round just always seems to prove disappointing. I got this book ages ago, but it wasnt until I was recently off sick that I could settle down to read this book and once I started I was engrossed and finished it pretty quickly!
Harry Potter and the philosophers stone is the first in the series of tales by JK Rowling about a young wizard boy named Harry. At the beginning of the book he is unaware there is anythign special about him. He knows his parents have died and he is stuck living with his Aunty and Uncle and their terrible son. None of whom are very nice to him.
One day he recieves a visit from a wizard, Hagrid, who tells him to enrol in a special school called Hogwarts. I have to be careful how much detail I go into here as I do not want to ruin the storyline, but the rest of the story chronicles Harry's story at Hogwarts, in the first year. The subsequent books then detail the following years. For me the best parts of the story are the magic and wonder that features all the way through. Nothing is normal at Hogwarts, everything is different, meal times, doorways lessons etc. The story also focuses on Harry's battle against evil.
The whole time I read the story I was transported into this amazing magic world, and I loved every minute of it. I was able to follow the storyline, just, but maybe younger readers may struggle with this and also maybe a little scared of the dark arts, so bear that in mind.
This is the thinest of the Harry Potter books. Tonight I am getting started on number 2!
Summary: A must have.

- 22/10/09 I read this book aged seven, and ever since I've been in love with the series! I'm listening to "..Askaban" now. Stephen Fry is great. |

- 22/10/09 Surely If you watch the film then read the book, you'll look back and realise how disappointing the film was? :) |
