Advantages: Exciting, Easy to read, Good for adults as well as kids
Disadvantages: Rip off of LOTR, Another 3 books to come so box set maybe bad idea
I was really looking forward to reading these books because at the time the movie was just about to come out on DVD and there was still a lot of hype surrounding the series. The stories, incase you don't know, centre around young Harry Potter who was orphaned as a baby and brought up by his horrible Aunt and Uncle who are very snobbish and treat him like a bag of rubbish. He's also bullied by his cousin who is spoiled absolute rotten. Harry is treated like this because his Aunt and Uncle didn't approve of the fact Harry's parents were involved with magic and wizardry and they are determined to keep Harry away from that "nonsense". When Harry reaches 11 he is contacted by Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and eventually he starts school there, much to the disgust of his guardians. The stories then follow Harry's adventures through his school years 1 - 4 and his fates with the Dark Lord Voldemort who killed his parents. I seriously loved these books and was waiting anxiously for the next installment until I read Lord of the Rings. There are far too many likenesses between the two that are more than just a coincidence and I'm am extremely surprised that JK Rowling has managed to get away with them. Maybe it's because Lord of the Rings has only really surfaced in the last year and that many people associated it with Adult Fiction and not Children's Fiction like Harry Potter is supposed to be. I'm not completely finished Lord of the Rings yet but when I have I'll come back and list all the similarities.

wicked_witch - 06/07/02 You're joking! LOTR is a classic, Harry Potter is great but nowhere near LOTR. The style of writing are nothing similar, the storylines are nothing alike, themes, everything else, they're not similar at all, except for the magic and wizardry stuff. |
