American author Gary Paulsen makes his living writing wilderness stories for teenagers. Hatchet was written in 1987 and first published in the UK in 1989. Brian is thirteen years old and his mother and father have recently divorced. The courts have decided that in the summer Brian is to live with his father in the north Canadian oil fields and so he is off to see him for the first time.
