If you are a fan of Chuck then this is a book you will love. Like his other novels Haunted is a journey into the strange, surreal and often disturbing. The novel is based around a group of writers who attend a secret writers retreat in a bid to create the next great American novel - this however acts as a framework for what is essentially a collection of 23 short stories and poems. Initially the retreat sounds like a good idea but when the characters begin going to extremes to sabotage the situation so that they end up the survivor of what they think will be a great story you know it cannot end well. Each chapter is split into 3 parts whereby we get a tale about the retreat, a poem about the character and the characters own story. The book is most famous for the story "Guts" in which young boys are warned of the dangers of self pleasure. The narrator begins the story with the instruction to hold your breath for the duration of the story. Do not eat before reading would have been a more useful instruction. I like to have a book of short stories to hand when travelling on the bus or metro as you can usually finish a full story before you reach your stop. Not a good idea when reading "Guts" the vivid descriptions of the boys final comeuppance left me feeling unbelievably sick so much as I had to get off a stop early to prevent myself from vomiting a true testament to the talent of Palahniuk's writing. If you are looking for a book about spooks and spectres then this is not for you. If you are looking for a book that will entertain and disturb in equal measure then you will love this.
Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk is a very strange novel made up of twenty-three of the most horrifying, hilarious, mind blowing, stomach-churning tales you'll ever encounter. That is indeed what it states on the back of this bizarre book... This has got to be the most strange book that I have ever read in my entire life! At first when reading it, I couldn't understand the point of the book and the whole plot. It just seems to be a mixture of disgusting stories and interesting poems by the characters talked about in this book. Inbetween these weird...texts are little chunks of what is happening in the real world, where the "artists" are locked in a place and the food is running low. Now, I can't explain the plot in great detail because it's too weird and not very understandable to me. I don't particularly recommend reading this book, unless you want to be disgusted out of your mind and are in the mood to feel slightly confused... The reason I bought this book was because I was looking for a book of halloween stories to scare some chums. The front cover seemed appealing and looked like it could be a little spooky, but clearly not in that way. Something else I noticed on the front cover was the sticker saying "PARENTAL ADVISORY READ IT AT YOUR OWN RISK"... Now I'm probably quite a bit younger than you who is reading this, so it wasn't a good idea to read this! I would say its best to read for 18+ I have no idea why this book was named Haunted, because it's nothing like that. The first proper story that I read within the book is called Guts....it was definitely stomach churning, its a story about how a guy got his guts ripped out because he was doing something very dirty under water...... You read the book if you want to find out what happens!
