Advantages: nice pics

Disadvantages: bit rude

Hawk is one of the world's best skateboarders, and certainly one of the best known. In this, his autobiography, he tells the tale of his life from start to present. The book is filled with photos which fall onto the pages in random order, and that makes it quite different to other books. It's fun to see the pics of Hawk growing up, and I enjoyed the layout.

The writing is clear and easy to read, although this one is rendered a bit inappropriate for young kids with some talk of sex in it, which is a shame as I suppose a lot of kids would like to read it. The early part chronicles the childhood of Hawk, and it's nothing short of inspirational to read how he kept persevering through hard times and falling off his board all the time. The second part looks at the life of fame and criticism for the man who never really fit into the scene. Of course, it's all written with the benefit of hindsight that Hawk would go on to rule the scene, but it's hard not to feel sorry for him.

All in all, this is a nice book, and certainly an excellent read for someone interested in skateboarding who needs a bit of encouragement to keep going at it.

Summary: do it
