Round Ireland with a Fridge - Tony Hawks:
... Ireland with a Fridge could be subtitled Round Ireland with a sense of humour. It is an amusing book, it set me to thinking that I could do with doing something interesting like that, and that is never a bad thing. I work in Ireland frequently and reading this reassured me a bit that the Ireland I started working in twenty years ago, hasn t been entirely devoured by the Celtic Tiger. The people he meets an... Round Ireland with a Fridge - Tony Hawks ... don t know why I originally picked Round Ireland With A Fridge up in the library as it s definitely not the kind of book I would usually read, but as it was due back in a few days and I had nothing else to read I thought I might as well try it. Round Ireland With A Fridge is, as you would suspect from the title, a comedy look at a trip around the circumference of Ireland that one man made with, well, a fridge in tow. A strange image I know, but author Tony Hawks explains the idea away by recollecting a boozy night out with friends where the tale of a man seen hitchhiking with a fridge caused much amusement. A wager was then made, £100 said that he couldn t travel Ire... Read the full review: Only in Ireland! by i_am_joy |

A Piano in the Pyrenees: The Ups and Downs of an Englishman in the French Mountains - Tony Hawks ... is 44 years old and wants to give up 5-a-side football. Having lost 8-2 it all seems too much these days and an ensuing chat with friends in the pub afterwards reveals Tony s two aims in life other than 5-a-side football: to meet his soul mate and find an idyllic house abroad. Egged on by his friend, Kevin, who happens to adore skiing, Tony decides to explore the idea of buying a house in the Pyrenees mountains in France. The subsequent trip across the Channel takes the intrepid duo to the town of Tarbes where, having dealt with Tony s *Formophobia (witty appendix note = fear of bureaucratic paperwork) the local estate agent directs them to a house "...perched o... Round Ireland with a Fridge - Tony Hawks ... I would like to report the theft of a fridge!” Garda:” A fridge you say?” Hawkes:”Well yes…” Garda:” Are you the owner of this fridge?” Hawke’s: I’m hitching around Ireland with it” Garda:” Are you a comedian or something” Hawke’s: “Yes”. So, how many people had heard of stand-up comic Tony Hawks in the mid-nineties? Well not many if he needs the inane attention seeking act of dragging a fridge around Ireland with his thumb up in the air to bag a book. What do you mean you still haven’t heard of him? He has played tennis with the Moldovan national football team since. Where have you been! Apparently it wasn’t a stunt to boost his profile in a forest of lanky mi...
