North - Seamus Heaney: ... is a collection written by Irish poet Seamus Heaney and was first published in 1975. Seamus Heaney as I have just mentioned is an Irish poet. He was born in Northern Ireland in 1939 but currently lives in Dublin. It is said that he moved to Dublin due to persecution in Northern Ireland because of the political side to his poetry but this has never truly been confirmed or denied. Heaney began his profession as...

kambing Death of a Naturalist - Seamus Heaney

After studying Heaney s poetry for GCSE, and loving it, I personally went to Heaney s birthplace in Ireland, and now all his poems have an even more vivid meaning to me. My 2 favourites - Death of a Naturalist and Digging Death of a Naturalist tells of a young boy s fascination with nature, presented through a pond-side scene, which to the reader appears oppressive, disgusting, and sweltering . Heaney uses imagery and phonology to great effect, and contrasts the boy s emotions to those of the reader. In the 2nd stanza, we return ...

... so long ago I read a comment by someone who felt he could not benefit in any way from reading Nobel-Prize-winning Seamus Heaney s poetry because he had nothing in common with Heaney. Well, I beg to disagree: I m not Irish and I didn t grow up on a farm, but I can be enriched by reading these wonderful poems. I ve chosen to go into detail with two of my favourite poems from this anthology, the title poem Death of a Naturalist , and also Blackberry-Picking , in the hope of showing the kind of experience that can be had from reading such poetry. Death of a Naturalist focuses on Heaney s experience of collecting and watching frogspawn as a child, and his reaction whe...

... sampling his work in detail, I found myself dismissing Seamus Heaney as “one of the Irish poets“. I expected him to be political, whilst I admit to being largely ignorant of the man and his life. Think of Ireland and you think of lush green country fields or blood-red city streets - what ripe fair for an angry man to work his pen upon. Who would write of the country when they could write of the history and violence of the country? I was very wrong. The first thing that has occurred to me, especially with some of his earlier work, is that Heaney often seems to be apologising to me, the reader, as if he believes there is something intrinsically impure ...
