Dave Pelzer has written a number of autobiographic books detailing the abuse he suffered as a child. The first book 'A Child Called It' is a very difficult and heartbreaking book to read, as it details his childhood abuse by his mother. The further books detail his adolescence and in particular his life in foster care and then adult life. In 'Help Yourself' Dave Pelzer uses his own experiences of abuse to empower the reader and he does so in a very down-to-earth and honest way, the reader can understand and accept this man's testimony because he is a living example of courage overcoming adversity.
