Henry VIII: King and Court - Alison Weir ... alike. In Henry VIII: King and Court, Alison Weir takes on this forbidding reputation to produce an admirably detailed, if somewhat cumbersome, biography of a king who married six times and presided over England's cataclysmic split with Roman Catholicism. Weir's main task is to overturn the caricature of Henry as a man who thought of nothing but chasing the ladies, and who threw chicken bones over his shoulder. This seems a rather obvious characterisation to challenge, but Weir proceeds to amass an extraordinary wealth of detail about Henry's cultivated court, from its learning, architecture and political machinations, to how many people handled Henry's bedsheets and the food that his horses ate. The early sections get bogged down in too much detail, and detract from the political drama of Henry's growing estrangement from his first wife, Katherine of Aragon, and his fateful marriage to Anne Boleyn in 1532. The second section is much more convincing in tracing how the young, idealist humanist with liberal ideas about kingship was giving way to a selfish, dogmatic tyrant, as Henry dispenses with Wolsey, Sir Thomas More, Anne and then Cromwell, and the court increasingly sinks into factionalism and intrigue.

... Something surprising about Henry is how discreet he was generally about his affairs and because of this discretion we don't know about all of the mistresses or who they were. Another thing Henry was very, very good at is spending money. His father had built up a huge fortune and was considered to be very mean with money but Henry splashed out on land, houses, palaces, fine clothes, tapestries, jewels, gambling, expensive food, gifts and gadgets the second he got his hands on the cash so it's no surprise he was almost bankrup...more

Rating:

As some of you already know I'm a tad obsessed with Henry VIII and all things Tudor. I've read Alison Weir's book about Henry's six wives so thought it only right I should read one about the man himself. I bought my copy from Amazon for £7.19 but you can buy used copies for under £4. Alison Weir is a well known historian who has written lots of books including several about the Tudors. She doesn't write in a fictional style, all the contents are factual, based on evidence discovered since the period and her style of writing is to tell it how it happened with no embellishments. This book starts right at the beginning of Henry's reign. This is a ...  Read the complete review
