Being Emily - Anne Donovan
by SmithSJ01 - written on 05/10/08 (Very useful, 26 readings)
Rating:
you forget about it. Even for words that you may not recognise, it is easy to put them into context. Fiona s life is challenging at times and Anne Donovan certainly doesn t hold back but what you have to remember as a reader is that we are party to the challenges through the eyes of whatever age Fiona is at the time of them happening. It is easy to use the eyes and wisdom of an adult to solve her problems or think about how we might handle them, however using a child s or teenager s logic brings different results; some of which are painful. I initially didn t like this novel, I was really struggling to get into it but couldn t put my finger on the reason why. The ...

Buddha Da - Anne Donovan

Rating:
point of view that it is a story about a guy joining the Buddhists, but more so from the way we have it presented to us. The author, Anne Donovan, doesn t split this book up into traditional chapters. Instead we get chapters showing us the views of the three main characters: Jimmy the father, Liz the Mother and Anne Marie the daughter. They get turns at telling their story. Jimmy, a painter and decorator, has joined the Buddhists. Why a normal working class man who like the bevvy would turn to Buddhism, might seem a bit of a mystery. Why he would appear not to really take his wife and daughter s feeling into account may seem more of a mystery. His wife Liz a ...

Buddha Da - Anne Donovan

Rating:
Ma da s a nutter. Radio rental. This is how twelve year old Anne Marie introduces us to her dad, Jimmy, who has turnt intae a Buddhist. At first she thinks it s another one of his wee projects of which he will soon tire, but he carries on with his interest, which soon begins to impact greatly on family life. Written in a Glaswegian dialect which I found distracting at first but soon got used to, Buddha Da is written from three points of view. Anne Marie, her mother Liz and her father Jimmy all present their own side of the story. Anne Marie s chapters are generally the most upbeat and humorous. She is interested in why her da likes Buddhism, but doesn t really ...
