Best of the best (His Dark Materials - Philip Pullman)
Member Name: JohnC1977
Advantages: Amazing concept - amazingly written Disadvantages: Almost loses it close to the end One of the best fantasy series "for children" I think I have ever read. In fact I will go a bit further and say that it is in scope to be on of the best fantasy trilogies I have ever read. I have to apologise "Lord of the Rings" - we have had a fantastic relationship over the years but I did kind of cheat on you with "His Dark Materials". If you ignore the movie version of "Northern Lights" that came out late last year (named "The Golden Compass" after the American print of the book) and just pick up this trilogy and read it from start to finish, I guarantee you won't be disappointed. Unfortunately, the third book, "The Amber Spyglass" is the weakest of the three, but it is still an amazing read. And if you aren't hooked by the first couple of chapters in the first book then I will be very surprised. Of course, the second book, "The Subtle Knife" really manages to up the ante... and I would hate to have to choose which my favourite of the two was. I hate giving stuff away in books so sometimes reviews are tough to write. Just grab a copy of these books and start reading. Summary: Great story for adults and kids alike |
