One word i have to say about this series is 'amazing.' I got the recommendation from a couple of my friends, and so i decided i might as well read it. When i got northern lights (being the first book in the series), i thought its similar size to lord of the rings which put me off by 2%. I started readin it and found it boring, but as soon as you get past the first couple of pages, then thats when you have a total different view. It suddenly becomes interesting, because the author has explained what the book is about. The objects and characters are really good in the way the author has explained and described them. Basically northern lights is about when Lyra's friend Roger disappears, she and her daemon, pantalaimon, determine to find him. The ensuing quest leads them to the bleak spendour of the north, where armoured bears rule the ice and witch queens fly through the frozen skies - and where a team of scientists is conducting experiments too horrible to be spoken about. Lyra overcomes these strange terrors, only to find something yet more perilous waiting for her - something with consequences which may even reach beyond the northern lights. This is one of those books which one can heardly bear to close...astonishingly gripping and convincing. The second book called the subtle knife, i couldn't wait to read, and this book obviously is to do with a knife. Will is twelve years old and he's just killed a man. Now he's on his own, on the run, determined to discover the truth about his father's disappearance. then will steps through a window in the air into another world, and finds himself with a companion - a strange, savage, little girl called Lyra, Like Will, she has a mission which she intends to carry out at all costs. But the world of Cittagazze is a strange and unsettling place. Deadly, soul eating spectres stalk the streets, while high above, the wingbeats of distant angels sound against the sky. And in the mysterious
Torre degli Angeli lurks Cittagazze's most important secret - an object which people from many worlds would kill to possess...the knife. When the third book came out, i was even more excited because it was getting better and better all the time. I knew this was going to be the last book, so i was also anxious to see how it would end. The Amber Spyglass forms the third part volume of philip Pullmans masterpiece, his dark materials trilogy. It's about Lyra and Will, the ordinary children who were left in such danger at the end of book two, find themselves in the final part of the story facing even greater perils. But there are old friends who come to their aid, not least Iorek Bryrnison, the armoured bear, and the scientist Dr Mary Malone. There are new allies:the gallivespians, hand high dragonfly riders with poison spurs, and the mulefa, strange wheeled creatures with the power to see dust. And there are new danger, including a journey to the worst world of all - a journey that exerts a terrible cost on both children. But they will not be children for much longer. As they come to the end of their childhood, not only are they vulnerable to the spectres, those shimmering destroyers of adult's deamons, but they have to face, without knowing it, the challenge posed by the fate that has been approaching Lyra all her life. And the survival of everything finally comes to depend on one simple action: one simple responce to one simple story. Like all the greatest stories, this one is deep and has far to go. At its simplest it is a story of courage and humanity about a boy and girl with a destiny to fulfil. At its deepest it whirls the reader into a universe of marvels and dazzling thought, and you know you are treading with the author in territory of perviously unvisited by rhyme or prose. So, now its up to you, have i convinced you to read it or not? you decide All i have to say now is philip pullman is one of the finest authors to this date.

I'm sorry, I really did try to read this. I'm sure it contains very useful opinions but, HAVE YOU NEVER HEARD OF PARAGRAPHS?

I hope that your op does encourage people to read this series. I have and loved every moment. I saw an interview with the author once. THe series started from four words. He wrote down "Lyra and her Daemon" and the story came from there. I am still looking for mine, but I think it is a small cat.

Great op, but if you stick in some paragraphs now and then, it will make for easier reading, and will help with your ratings.

Lisa :)
