One of the best fantasy series "for children" I think I have ever read. In fact I will go a bit further and say that it is in scope to be on of the best fantasy trilogies I have ever read. I have to apologise "Lord of the Rings" - we have had a fantastic relationship over the years but I did kind of cheat on you with "His Dark Materials". If you ignore the movie version of "Northern Lights" that came out late last year (named "The Golden Compass" after the American print of the book) and just pick up this trilogy and read it from start to finish, I guarantee you won't be disappointed.
