London: the Biography - Peter Ackroyd:
... Londoner his passion and fascination with the capital is clear throughout this 79 chapter compendium of London past and present. One of the key things that makes this unique from any other guide book or History of London is the order in which Ackroyd has chosen to explore London. Rather than dividing the chapters up to encompass neat districts or relay the history in chronological order Ackroyd acknowledges t... Reflections of Strouden Park, Bournemouth and Its Surrounding Districts - Yvonne Khan ... might have lived in the Strouden Park area of Bournemouth long before Castlepoint was built, or even before the Hampshire Centre was built. If you are a long time resident you will have seen many changes to the area. You will have seen it grow from a typical edge of town community, to one that is heavily visited by shoppers and one with a steady flow of traffic thanks to the shopping centres in their various faces, and also to the coming of the spur road now nearly forty years ago. Long gone now is the Strouden Park Hotel, where many a night as a student was spent getting to know the locals. This is an excellent book for anyone who may have spent time in the area... Ghosts of Spain - Giles Tremlett ... thought this would be an interesting read, since I ve been living in Spain for about three and a half months now, and it mostly was. The book is divided into thirteen chapters, each of which deals with a different aspect of Spanish culture, at least in theory. The first few chapters deal with the Civil War and the Franco years. It also goes some way towards explaining ho... Read the full review: Re-awakening the ghosts by Starlight81 |

The Twelve Caesars - Suetonius ... Suetonius Tranquillis, more commonly known as Suetonius, was, to the best of our knowledge, born in 69 A.D, a year in which the Roman Empire was plagued by instability and which has become known as the Year of Four Emperors . Son of a Roman knight, Suetonius quickly rose to prominence during the reign of Emperor Hadrian (117 - 138 AD) rising to the position of chief secretary. As the name implies, in The Twelve Caesars Suetonius chronicles the lives of the first Twelve Caesars of the Roman Empire from the Julio-Claudian and Flavian dynasties, spanning from Julius Caesar to Domitian. What stands this out from other Roman histories, such as the work by Livy on the ... Read the full review: Vivid and Racy by bdgummer |
