Trident: A History - Dr Frank McKim:
... ground, its offset front undercarriage. Already we can see this is an aircraft worth having a book written about it. You can t get any more straightforward a title for a book on this aircraft as Trident: A History, by Dr Frank Kim. You will of course expect a good beginning to the book, and it does this very well by giving an excellent account of the aircraft s inception and its reason for being. The General Lay... The Bounty: The True Story of the Mutiny on the Bounty - Caroline Alexander ... I was aware of the story of the Mutiny on the Bounty. I had not seen any of the three films but the facts were pretty well established and were seared onto the collective folk consciousness. You know how it goes, nasty and cruel Captain Bligh treats his men so badly that they are forced to mutiny, led by the saintly Lt Fletcher Christian. Bligh and a few friends are put into a boat and set adrift whilst the mutineers set sale for Pitcairn island , a place so remote that it did not appear on any charts available at the time. How romantic is that? In this book Caroline Alexander takes a forensic approach to the events. Using original documents she is able to p... The Floating Brothel - Sian Rees ... Floating Brothel What is this book about? This is a factual account of the shipment of a boat load of women prisoners from Britain to the then newly established penal colony in Australia (where Sydney is now located). Some of the prisoners are also destined for a second penal settlement, established on Norfolk Island, about 1000 miles from the first. The book draws on several sources to construct the story, including court and prison records and much is taken from an account of the trip made by one of the ships crew, although that account was not given until many years later and is likely not to be fully accurate. The story is told in a matter-of-fact way, prese... Read the full review: Transportation to Parts Beyond The Seas - the women's story by andyk910 |

Mao: The Unknown Story - Chang, Halliday ... first thing I should probably point out before starting this review is that this is not the kind of book that ordinarily I would read but, after finishing Wild Swans by the same author last year, I became deeply interested in this paticular period of Chinese history and wanted to discover just how one man could come to have so much terrifying power and influence over a country. I read Wild Swans as part of a read-a-long with other members of an online book group and, to be honest, this was one of the most moving books I had ever read. It was with that in mind that I picked up Mao; an epic journey through Chinese history that has taken me a whole 10 months to read! No ...
