Advantages: Written by R.L. Stine
Disadvantages: story-line, 16 yrs olds can drive
As many of you know I have set myself a task to read all the point horror books I have. I am actually getting quite bored with them, which is shocking, however they are really good, and I am revising as well so maybe I prefer to read books rather than do revision, so I'm trying not to read until exams are over, as if that'll happen. I have 6 more Point Horror books to review, 2 of which I still need to read.
I am officially a massive fan of the Point horror books and I'm dreadfully upset to find out that they've gone and disappeared. I love the way these books are created and I think they are a real inspiration to everyone who would like to go down the author career route, as they are simple but brilliant. And if a publisher did the same as Point Horror has, then tonnes of new authors would find limelight. Famous authors (from the Point Horror series) include R.L. Stine (author of this book), Richie Tankersley Cusick, Malcolm Rose & Caroline B. Cooney to name a few. Although there has been a few books from this series I've read that I thought the author should have became famous only they didn't, here's a few I think: Samantha Lee (Read Reviews on Demon & Demon II), Sinclair Smith (read review on "The Waitress"), Linda Cargill (read review on "The Dark") and Carmen Adams (read review on "The Claw"). If Point Horror had lasted for a little longer I reckon these authors would have been famous, and I really feel for these authors, it usually is the ones whose books are quite possibly the better ones of the series.
This book is called Hit and Run, and it is written by THE famous R.L. Stine. For you who don't know, he is the writer of Goosebumps (surely you've heard of that series, if not then where have you been?). Goosebumps is most possibly the most know children's series in the world (I think, I don't know if this is true). And R.L. Stine would be just an average person on the street if it wasn't for Point Horror (again maybe not so true, but I believe it).
Hit and Run was published in America in 1992 and then published here in the UK in 1993 (the year I was born). Now many people may think that I have rated this book on the basis that it was written before I was born, and therefore growing up and getting to know the 21st Century will show that writing techniques has changed, however this is definitely not true! As there is Point Horror books released at the same time (such as "The Cemetery", which is waiting to be reviewed) that I would rate 5 stars. So please don't pass judgement on the fact that I might think this book is out of date.
Hit and Run is basically about a group of 16 year old kids, who have their driving tests coming up, (how I wish I lived in America, I could be done my driving test by now, but I have to wait 1 whole year). In this group of 4 kids, there is Cassie, who is the only girl, and who is very sympathetic towards the 3 guys; there is Winks, who is the practical joker, he always does it to Eddie; there is Scott, who can't stand up for himself; and there is Eddie, who is always getting picked on. Winks decides to play a practical joke on Eddie by pretending Winks' eye has fallen out, this results in Eddie fainting. Afterwards they decide to go for a drive (this is basically breaking the law as they only have provisional licences); they practise on a deserted road. A few days after, they do it again but this time they run someone over, now they are all scared and afraid, and all of a sudden death threats are occurring all over the place, and everyone is scared.
Again I got annoyed, the author tricked me into thinking it was someone else, and no matter how hard I attempted to weigh up the options and pick the one it's most likely to be I ended up thinking the wrong person, and this can be mightily unnerving and frustrating at times, but once you know who you feel both shocked and scared, because that person managed to deceive the main character so what else can it/he/she do?
I wouldn't say I loved this book, I would more likely say this is a very bad performance by Point Horror, and an extra ordinarily bad performance by R.L. Stine.
Again I feel like I should be able to write more and feel like I'm missing a lot please help me guys.
Thank you all for reading and rating, and I am sure I will get back into rating yours when I have the time!
