This fascinating book gives the history of the Nazi Empire in Europe. It's one of the best histories of the Nazi era that I've read recently. Hitler's armies conquered most of mainland Europe but, apart from the Holocaust and the ever-contentious history of the French occupation, how the Germans ruled their newly acquired empire wasn't something I knew a lot about. It tells the story of German conquests from the absorption of Austria in 1938 to the collapse of the regime in 1945. It also goes back in time to discuss the origins of German imperialism and the First World War.
