One of my fvourite things to study in History is the two World Wars. Terry Deary caters for both of these within the book series, Horrible Histories, and one of these books is The Frightful First World War.

The cover of the book attracts me instantly. There is a picture of a soldier sitting deep in thought writing a letter, with a mess of fighting and barbed wire behind him. It looks very scary and highlights straight away what sort of adventure we are in to before we even open the book...

Inside the book you will learn all about the First World War, discovering what it was like on the Front and in the trenches for the soldier. It's not all writing, although the funny and witty lines from Deary are going to amuse you! There is a good mix of text, and images and diagrams and such like too. These are good as they often help people remember things a lot more than writing does, and also attract children.

The book is aimed at children of around 9 to 12 years of age. I personally feel that this is ideal. The writing is a good text size and fills the pages well, and they are attracted to the images. The language is nice and simple, with the odd piece of jargon added in here or there. It is also good for adults who are wanting to study the War for the first time, as it helps them get to grips with the basic facts.

You can buy this book in stores for £4.99, round about, but if you go to Amazon.co.uk, you can find it for just 1p! Even with the £2.75 postage and packaging charge, that really is a bargain compared to the RRP! I personally feel it is a fantastic price to pay, and if I didn't already own it, I would certainly pay that!

This is a delightfully amusing and educational book at a great price and is sure to encourage reading among younger children - what's not to like?! I adore it and I am sure you will too!
