Advantages: Great fun reading, good characters
Disadvantages: None from my eldest
Horrid Henry is a collection of books which have been designed for children around the 7 year old mark. The one which I am reviewing is called 'Horrid Henry Gets Rich Quick'. We bought this for my eldest who is just gone 7 as we wanted to get him reading bigger and more interesting books. I am pleased to say that he really has got into this series of books and loves to read about what Henry is getting up to!
The book is a paper back and the cover is purple with a picture of Henry tipping his piggy bank upside down trying to get money out of it. The title is in nice big purple and yellow lettering. Inside the book it has been split in 4 shorter stories which are as follows:-
1. Horrid Henry Runs Away.
The story starts with Henry having a bad day which is made worse when his Dad finds a letter which his teacher has sent home saying he is been naughty at school again, this is the third letter like this they have had this week. Henry is told that he will get no television, no comics and no sweets for a whole week which he is not very happy about. To make Henry angrier his brother Perfect Peter has also had a letter home saying how good he has been at school. Henry starts fighting with Peter and he soon finds himself in even more trouble and is sent to his room.
Henry tells his family that none of them want him there so his is going to run away. Will Henry really run away from home and his family and if so will he have all of the wild and fun adventures he thinks he would have?
2. Horrid Henry's Sports Day
Henry is at school and it is the day before sports day and the teacher Miss battle-Axe tells the class that she wants sports day to go very well and she looks at Henry and says she does not want anyone to spoil it. Henry does not like sports day as he is not very good at sports and last year he did not win a single event. Henry's brother Perfect Peter is the opposite and last year he won all of his events and races.
Henry spent that evening hoping for rain so sports day would be cancelled but the following morning they wake to find a lovely sunny day so Henry is not happy. He just wishes he would be able to win an event which might make him enjoy sports day. Will Henry be able to win something or will he go on hating sports day?
3. Horrid Henry Gets Rich Quick
Henry loved money, counting, holding and spending it but Henry never had any money. He wondered how his parents expected him to get by on just 50pnoer week. Henry tells his Mom that he needs more pocket money but Perfect peter over hears him and he says that he has more than enough pocket money and always manages to save some of what he is given. Mom agrees with Peter. Henry is not happy and pinches Peter who tells Mom and Henry soon finds that he will not be getting any pocket money for one week for being naughty. Henry is sad about this and says he needs his pocket money so he can buy things. Mom tells Henry that if he needs money then he will have to find a way to earn some.
Will Henry be able to find a way to earn the money he needs or is he going to have to learn to manage on the 50p pocket money he is given each week?
4. Horrid Henry's Christmas
Perfect Peter is looking through the toy catalo which Henry had had all morning say they are trying to write their Christmas lists. Henry has already written a massive one which is full of all the things he wants for himself. Henry think he needs to add more so he snatches the catalogue back but when Peter calls mom to tell her what Henry has done she tells him to give it back but it is alright as Henry has already spotted the ultimate toy which he thinks he just has to have.
Henry tells him Mom about the toy but she says no as she is not having the horrible noisy toy in the house. Dad also tells Henry no as it is just to expensive. Henry is sad about it and tells his parents that they are the most horrible ones in the world.
Will Henry finally get the toy of his dreams for Christmas or will Father Christmas think that Henry has been too naughty for it?
The book was written by Francesca Simon and I think that she has done a wonderful job with this book. Each of the 4 stories are a good length which means that the readers will stay involved in the stories and not loose interest with them from them being to long. She has managed to write each of the stories with nice basic words which means that my 7 year old is easily able to read these independently with no trouble.
The text throughout the book is a great size and is always on plain white sections of the pages which makes it much easier to read and see. There are illustrations in this book which have been done by Tony Ross. They are all in black and white and are pretty basic but do find that they are useful for seeing the characters and some of the things which Henry is getting up to. My 7 year old loves the illustrations and enjoys looking at them.
As I said before this book was written by Francesca Simon and was published by Orion Books. The retail price on the back cover of the paper back edition is £4.99 but this book is available cheaper on both Amazon and EBay. There are lots more books which form part of the Horrid Henry collection and I do recommend all of them as they are good fun books which encourage independent reading.
