David Lodge, not to everyone's tastes I know. But you must know who he is? Former Professor of English literature at Birmingham University, writer of critically acclaimed work, such as Changing Places and Small World and a leading theorist on literature and literary criticism. (Although he rather snubs his nose at the pompous crowd.) His most recent book, Thinks was fantastic, although still including his main theme of a man in a midlife sexual crisis.
