How I Lived a Year on a Pound a Day - Kath Kelly ***The Book*** In common with many people at the moment I find it quite interesting, to read about other people's recommendations for cutting back. I vaguely remembered reading about his in a newspaper and so ordered it to read from my library for free! I think that people will either love this book or hate it, depending on your stance. This book is about a woman who decided to live a year on a pound a day. She was at a dinner party and impulsively blurted out that she COULD live on a pound a day. It was a 'choice' she made, as she did have a part time job as a lecturer. She rented ... Read the complete review

I was bought this book by my parents for Christmas last year, after hearing snippets of her on the TV and reading about her in the news papers I was pretty excited to read the book and found out how she did it. £1 a day? For a year? I mean, that's pretty got to be inspirational! The book starts with Kath Kelly complaining to her friends how she has no money, and desperate to get her brother a unique wedding present she declares she'll live on £1 a day for a year to do it. Of course, it's not really £1 a day. It's £1 a day 'spends' after paying all her bills. Not all that inspirational afterall, as a frequent visitor to the money saving forum you ... Now I love money saving. And I love reading. I had been waiting for ages to earn an Amazon voucher from survey sites to buy this book (see? no spending!) until my lovely husband bought it for me for my birthday. I read it in a day, keen to see how I could change my spending habits to save up some more cash. Then I read it again a week later. And ... the book didn't disappoint. From the start, I should say that if you read it and not expect some extreme methods, then you're going to be a bit unhappy. To live on a pound a day does not require just giving up going out one evening a week, or cutting back on choccie bars. Kath Kelly's complete change of lifestyle ... Read the complete review

I'm a big believer that we could all cut back a little and that most of what many people think of as 'necessary' is really not. Nothing irritates me more than someone saying 'I'd really love to... but I just can't afford it" because often it's more 'won't' than 'can't' - money is an easy excuse to avoid doing something you're scared of doing (I know, I've used it!). Giving up luxuries is easy but we all have different ideas of what constitutes luxury and I guess, if we really wanted something, we'd prioritise. Kath Kelley has proved that its possible (ok, you might say she cheated a little but is that really the important point here?) all you and I have to decide is ... Read the complete review

The author of this book Kathy Kelly should be very proud of me as I managed to read her book for nothing making use of a friends copy and so saving the purchase price which would have blown most of a weeks budget based upon her recommendations. The thought of being able to live on a pound a day without resorting to crime does seem absurd but then there are a group of people called freegans who attempt to live for nothing, personally I do not see the point, spending your life scratching around trying not to spend money and would rather go out and enjoy myself. This is a relatively short book, it only stretches to 184 pages and is written in a diary ... Read the complete review
