Advantages: Big Print
Disadvantages: Long-Winded, Too Descriptive, Boring
How To Be Good is not about how to be good! Confused? Nick Hornby has written this novel from the viewpoint of a woman GP who has just had an affair, her husband is going nuts and she's basically bored. The book itself is too long-winded, he has subjected us to several chapters of descriptions rather than just story telling. The book itself teaches a very good lesson to young lovers though, that Love is not just being able to hold hands in the park, or wanting to rip each others clothes off, it's about sticking by even though neither of you are happy, because it's a partnership. Although I am a great fan of Hornbys previous work, I have to admit that this book fell well short of his usual 5 star rating. He must be struggling to find new ways of writing to produce a book that cannot grab your attention. The only reason I wanted to finish it was to see what happened to a young Faith-Healer called GoodNews. Don't buy this book, get it from the library if you have too.

- 06/07/01 I agree with spacelamb, maybe it's that he is not as good at writing as a woman?

- 05/07/01 What a disappointment - I loved High Fidelity and About A Boy. |

- 05/07/01 One question - how have you had the opportunity to read it if it's not published yet? Tell me your secret and I'll use it next time a Harry Potter book comes out! |
