I bought 'How to Cheat in Photoshop' in February 2007, knowing very little about the program other than how to crop and rotate a picture. 14 months later, I consider myself to be an intermediate to advanced user. I can't recommend this book highly enough. Its author, Steve Caplin, is a graphic artist and illustrator, creating photomontages for major publications such as newspapers and magazines. The book, which is in softback format, is very easy to follow.
