How to draw dinosaurs

Another book from the Usborne range, and this time sure to appeal to Little Miss- crafty ideas with dinosaurs as the main focus!

THE BOOK

The book has a rather appealing front cover, with smiling dinosaurs featuring rather strongly!

We find a list of the contents, and then with no further preamble are straight into the "makes".

There are 17 dinosaur makes in all, and with ideas such as cartoon Dinosaurs, Prehistoric swamp, Spikes and Scales, Hungry Dinosaurs and Baby Dinosuars, I know we are sure to find something which has instant appeal.

Each idea is on a double page spread with plenty of pictures to maintain the interest of a youngster. The instructions are clearly given in numbered points, each with a simple picture of what the drawing should look like at each stage, and a written instruction underneath. Although the written instructions are in simple sentences with not many tricky words, I would advise an adult to be on hand to read along with the child. There are also other tips and ideas given for each make, and these are either at the side of the double page spread, or given as ideas in amongst the pictures.

The illustrations themselves all feature examples of that particular drawing, so children can get plenty of ideas as they go along. They are amusing, and usually feature very friendly looking dinosaurs in weird and wonderful colours, with googly eyes and smiling faces. Many of the pictures have a background, which does encourage Little Miss to give her dinosaurs a whole homeland.

In the centre of the book are a range of stickers (more than 150) including trees, large leaves, and insects. These have been used to good effect on the pictures with a background.

OTHER HOW TO DRAW BOOKS

There are other books in the same series, and since we have a few of them, I can vouch that they are of the same high quality

The books include:

How to draw:
Animals
Christmas
Princesses and Ballerinas
Trucks and Tractors

VERDICT

Another good book from Usborne. The instructions are clearly laid out step by step and the illustrations are fun and appeal to children. The makes usually require items which would be readily found in a house, and don't need particularly specialised materials. The only grumble I would have is that there is no "what you will need" section at the start of the make. I do find it useful to have it clearly stated what we will need, and we have sometimes been caught out. Although it is a how to draw book, it also calls upon you to use paint, magazines, tissue, wax crayons, etc, so a handy hint at the start of the make would be good.

However, grumble aside, an excellent book which Little Miss has enjoyed using. She has drawn many of the dinosaurs, and they do tend to turn out very like the ones in the book- she has had lots of practise. The stickers are handy to finish off backgrounds, and in general she is well pleased with her efforts.

Anyone with a liking for dinosaurs and drawing would probably enjoy this one.

Thanks for reading.
