With this book Tom Clancy started he's very succesful writer career. Here we meet Jack Ryan, who'll be the protagonist of many adventures till become U.S.A. president. At that time Ryan was a simple CIA analyst, but he's already very able.
The story begin when a new U.R.S.S. nuclear-powered submarine disappears. It has a new propulsion system that is pratically noiseless.
For U.S.A. it's very worrying this new submarine class, because it can bring a lot of cruise missile, many of this armed with atom-bomb, and, for it's probulsion so silent, it can arrive near U.S.A. cost withuot be located.
But there's another interesting thing. All U.R.S.S. ships are agitated, all are going from east to west. Why? They are searcing for the disappeared sub? Ryan has an intuition: the captain want to desert! Why? How? Ryan will be able to understand if it's the truth and, above all, to take the sub without U.R.S.S. understand it.
This story is very exciting and it's one of the best of Clancy. I think you have to read it!
