Advantages: Really gripping book, Really well written

Disadvantages: May be a bit long for some

This book was a completely random purchase. The other week we were going on holiday to France, which involved a 6 hour ferry crossing from Portsmouth to Cherbourg. I like reading, and so thought I would take a good book on board with me, as I would have plenty of time to read it. however I left it (Hannibal) in the car, so was forced to go to the onboard shop and buy a book.

I decided, purely by reading the bit on the back of the book to buy The Hunt For Red October by Tom Clancy. I have never read/heard of Tom Clancy before, so didn't know what to expect.

I was completely blown away. As soon as I started reading it I was engrossed. I could not put it down, I wanted to keep reading. I don't think I have ever found a book quite so gripping as this one.

Tom Clancy obviously put a lot of effort into this book. It is so detailed. He must have spent a long time researching the subjects covered in the book, as it is all extremley convincing.

The main character in this book is Jack Ryan, an American Government Employee. I understand that most of Tom Clancy's books revolve around Jack Ryan, but am not sure, as I haven't read any of them yet.

The book tells the story of a Russian submaring, the Red October, and it's officers plight to defect to the USA. I'm not going to say much more, as it would ruin it for you if you haven't read the book.

The situation escalates into near war, with lots of US and Soviet warships and submarines involved in a standoff. The way this is portrayed in the book makes you feel like you are there. You feel involved, and drawn into it. You can really feel the tension, and the sense of relief when things happen as planned, and the terror when the situation seems to be getting worse and worse.

You are always guessing what is going to happen next, as there are quite a lot of twists in the plot.

Personally i think this is an excellent book, and reccomen
d you read it if you get the chance. However if you read it over a period of days/weeks some of the feel of tension etc may be lost. I read this book in 1 day, I literally did not put it down, except of course to have lunch!

I'm definately going to read some more of Tom Clancy's books.
