Hunted - P.C. Cast
Advantages: The next book in the series.
Disadvantages: Not as strong storywise.
This is the fifth book out of a series of six books surrounding the so-called "House of night" books, unfortunately for me the sixth book in the series is not due to be released for at least a month so I will have to consol myself with the new series of vampire books that my sister has lent me (reviews to follow!).
The book I will now review is - "Hunted by P.C and Kristin Cast"
A note to mention that this will contain spoilers for the previous books, this is unfortunate but unavoidable as this is a series that follows on.
The book starts where the previous finished off, anyone familiar with the previous reviews will now the central characters, but for you newbies I will recap!
After a dark angel, Kalona rises from his earthly tomb, right slap bang in the middle of the house of night grounds, and the high priestess Neferet finally admits that it was she that helped him rise and declares herself his queen, the central characters have to escape from the house of night, knowing that there lives are in danger.
Zoey Redbird is the main character that is now the groups self declared high priestess, this in laymans terms is a vampire that has immense power, but also the respect and confidence of other vampires. This is Zoey down to a "t", not only was she marked a short while ago (only three months), to become a vampire, but she has been singled out by Nyx (the top vampire goddess), as the most powerful vampire "fledgling" to ever have existed, quite a privilege for the former step daughter of one of the house of nights biggest opposing groups, the people of faith!
The book starts Zoey and her "circle" hiding out in the tunnels with the new, and yet to be discovered red fledglings (these are previous marked vampires whose bodies rejected the change, died than changed into something else...I know confusing, I promise it's not when you read the book itself!).
Alongside Zoey is Damian and his boyfriend Jack, Shanuee, Erin, Aphrodite, Erik and Darius, all of whom escaped after Kalona rose and took over the house of night and all the inhabitants, that means that these few are now enemies of Kalona, or that's what you would assume, though Kalona has other ideas, he is a fallen angel whose lust for human woman had him imprisoned once before, but he seems to be unable to get Zoey of his mind.
Will the group be able to defeat Kalona, will they ever return to the house of night or will they lose their lives in the process..........
This book was actually the weakest story wise of all the previous books I have read, I didn't feel as into it as the others.
As with the previous books there always seems to be one pivotal character added that helps the story flow, for this book it was Stark, a very talented archer whose "gift" is that wherever his is and whichever way his arrow is pointing, the arrow will strike true and kill whomever is the intended target.
I do feel that not enough was made of this character, though I do feel he will be heavily involved in the sixth book as a future love interest for Zoey.
Alongside Stark, the love stakes are again set high for Zoey, after losing all of her "ménage a trois" of men, one vampire fledgling, one vampire professor and a human she imprinted with, that just happens to be her ex-boyfriend from when she was still human, suddenly it's all back on, this should be annoying to read about, but gives the impression that Zoey, albeit a high priestess of vampires, is still just a 17 year old girl as well, this actually gives the story or at least the characters a bit more believability to them.
Also the fact that she has got so much going on in her personal life alongside battling with her, not so imaginary demons, gives her a vulnerable side, showing that even someone with so much power still has the ability to cock things up, I think this is a good message to many of the slightly younger readers.
I say slightly younger, as with the previous books there is quite a lot of sexual content, this is usually written in conjunction with the bloodlust that the vampires feel, when feeding from a human host it feels sexual to them, this is how vampires can feed without the "food" putting up too much of a fight.
This being the case and also the high level of descriptive text involving murder and in this particular book, a coupe of incidences concerning rape, this text is not suitable for the younger reader.
As mentioned earlier this is not the best book in the series, though it is still a good read, though not as absorbing as the previous, I would still recommend it though!

Pricewise these are available from Asda for the price of £4.00, or for the slightly dearer option, these can be purchased from Waterstones but can then be bought as part of "buy 3 for 2" offer currently running, a good option if you own a loyalty card for them.
