Advantages: Live the life of a Movie Star, exciting, sad....it has it all
Disadvantages: Had trouble finding the book
If you pick up this book you can be sure that it will not leave you bored, in fact get asked to put the book down and make a cup of tea and you may be trying your hand at Karate chopping the table. I have been on a spell of reading Auto Biography's and this one really keeps you going. Starting with Jackies youth you come to understand the hardship that he endured without feeling that he is complaining. Jackie started in the Chinese Opera with hard master who trained them for many hours a day. He is not the best, by his own admissions, but trained through the years to be the best he could be. As the story moves onto Jackies teens and twenties he gives clear and detailed descriptions of his life's ups and downs without glossing over the bad parts, or making the good parts sound unbelievable. Before his career in the movies Jackie was a stunt man, even working on sets with Bruce Lee. This is the reason for his current films being so dramatic, but at the same time completing all the stunts himself. One of these stunts nearly led to his death....you will have to read the book to find out which one and when. The book finishes during the shooting for "Rush Hour" but tells of his problems coping with Fame, Fortune and the onslaught of American critics, to the point that he almost gave it up. The book has a number of pictures showing Jackie through the years and with other stars, including Stallone, Willis. The final pages show a list of his injuries (why do you think the book is so thick), and the films that he has done. Jackie is not afraid to make fun of himself and the book mirrors his attitude on screen, being amazed, amused and shocked with each turn of the page. Anyone who has seen a Jackie Chan film, laughed at the humour and sat amazed at the stunts will be enchanted by this book, just don't lend anyone your copy as you might never see it again.
I took this book on holiday and read it constantly for two days and would have taken it to dinner as well if allowed!!
