Advantages: Interesting and thought provoking. It will make you think in a different way.
Disadvantages: Hypnotism doesn't work for everyone, but you already knew that.
Paul McKenna is probably the world's most famous hypnotist. His working life started on the radio and an encounter with a hypnotist on his show opened up his interest in the subject and made him what he is today.
For most of us the first we knew of Paul McKenna was through his entertainment hypnotism show on TV where he hypnotised volunteers for our amusement. I suppose the shelf life of such a show is quite limited so thankfully he continued studying his art and turned it to more serious matters. He has helped a host of every day people and celebrities overcome addictions or fears, and also helped sportsmen to maximise their skills and give them the best possible chance of success.
With such a CV behind him I saw this title on the shelves and purchased it out of curiosity. It is a bold claim and I felt I owed it to myself to at least read it. Of course like most people I had the underlying suspicion that the only person that was going to get rich from this book was Paul McKenna himself but I kicked the little doubtful part of my mind in to touch and purchased it anyway.
The book comes with a CD on which there is a session of hypnotism to listen to. It is to be used in conjunction with the book to reinforce the ideas set out in the book. For me personally hypnotism just doesn't seem to work. I am just not very good at following verbal instructions at the best of times and I find it pretty much impossible to relax on cue. The chances are most people will get more out of the CD than I do though so I won't judge it negatively simply because of my own experience.
For me all the important information is to be gathered by reading the book. Like all of Paul McKenna self help books he deals with breaking down or Neuro-Linguistic Programming or NLP's for short.
NLP's are behavioural patterns that we all learn through our lives though most are imbedded in our sub conscious as we are growing up. Techniques to change NLP's have been used effectively to overcome such problems as phobias, disorders such as depression, psychosomatic illnesses, habit disorders and even learning disorders.
Through studying those people that excel in life NLP therapy techniques were developed to change learnt behavioural patterns to bring about a sense of well being and to overcome self imposed limitations. It is this last type of learned behaviour that is the most important aspect in becoming rich using this book and is what really opened my eyes up to my own attitudes while reading this material.
The one anecdote within the text that sums this up best for me goes a little like this.
"You are waiting for an interview for a job that you are well qualified for and are more than capable of doing. Shortly before you are due to walk into the interview room you find out the salary the job paid had an extra zero that you weren't expecting so instead of £30,000 per annum as you thought, it was actually paying £300,000. What do you do?"
This really got me thinking because I did find myself in that situation, not an extra zero but the job paid more than I first thought. So what did I do? I withdrew my application. Why? Because I considered myself unqualified to do it even though the criteria set out suggested I was more than qualified. So what does this say about me? According to the book it means I am carrying around an upper limit to how much I am comfortable earning, in other words my Wealth Thermometer is set too low.
The book deals with a variety of other issues such as the importance of positive thinking, resenting wealthy people, shaking off negative suggestions from the past, and for many readers possibly the most important of all, overcoming emotional spending. Emotional spending is buying items to make you feel better. This isn't a problem for me, I've been called mean more times than I can remember but I don't take offence because I'm quite proud of my meanness. However statistics suggest most have a rather large debt built up on credit cards due to this kind of spending. If emotional spending is a problem for you, this book will surely help if you allow it to.
Something that is central to the theories in this book is that wealth and richness isn't judged entirely in monetary terms. From the very beginning the book makes this clear and the intention is to help you to reach your own goals and what you consider to be wealthy. For me being wealthy would mean I can help my loved ones out financially if they needed me to, have the freedom to use my time as I wish and own a second home. I certainly have no desire to be managing director of a multinational corporation or live it up in Monte Carlo. The level of your personal goals doesn't really matter, the techniques are the same and the aim is the same.
There is never the promise that reading this book or using its techniques will magically manifest wealth before your eyes. It does however make you aware of the work ethic you need and to tap into your creativity and act upon your ideas.
Like all Paul McKenna books it is an interesting read and certainly not heavy. He cuts through the technicalities and complexities of the fabulous machine that is the human brain to give us easy to follow instructions that make it possible for us to better control our destiny.
The techniques in all Paul McKenna books are the same so if you have read any of his other material you will surely know what you are going to be doing in this one. The techniques are the same, but the reason for using the techniques changes depending on the subject matter.
For me personally, I can't say I have earned more money since reading this but it has only been a couple of days so what can I expect? Changing NLP's certainly takes time and reading this has at least made me aware that I do have certain obstacles standing in my way. Having awareness that these obstacles exist is the first step to overcoming them.
I believe most that read this will experience some benefit but it is obviously not a get rich scheme and it never promises to be.
This book is definitely interesting and thought provoking. It could very well help you understand why money comes easy to some and not to others. It may even make you realise you are already rich and you just need to take a little better care of the money you earn.
Summary: An excellent self help title.

- 23/08/09 Great Review, I dont think I believe anyone other than he is getting rich as a result and I think the title forges a promise not kept throughout the content by the sounds of it. C |
